Chief Kevin Beach reminds motorists that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Public Service Announcement from Chief Kevin Beach

The season for motorcycle riding is here and the Rome Police Department would like to remind the public to be cautious. All drivers are encouraged to pay closer attention while driving on the roadways as they are going to start seeing an increase in motorcycle traffic over the next couple of weeks.

Tips for motorists:

• Drivers need to look both ways, confirming it’s clear to go

• Avoid distractions within your vehicle i.e. cellphones, radio, trying to tend to children in the backseat

• Be cognizant of the smaller vehicles that will be sharing the roadway with you

• Obey all speed limits and traffic control devices

Tips for motorcyclists:

• Wear the proper safety equipment i.e. DOT approved helmet, proper footwear, jacket

• Take a motorcycle safety class

• Practice before going on the open roadway

• Ride within your skill set

• Obey all speed limits and traffic control devices

• Be alert of other vehicles while operating your motorcycle (just because you see them doesn’t mean they see you)

Hopefully these few tips help make a safe and enjoyable riding season for all.

Sincerely,

Chief Kevin Beach
